The study sought to examine some breastfeeding and weaning practices in terms of their underlying cultural beliefs of some 77 pregnant women in San Pablo City. A questionnaire-interview schedule was used to collect data from two weeks before the expected date of delivery, two weeks postpartum, and every month thereafter until the twelfth month from February 1983 to March 1984. Results revealed that mothers breastfeeding and weaning practices were governed by prevailing beliefs most of which did not seem to be too deeply ingrained but rather manifestations of poor knowledge. Beliefs are discussed in terms of their possible beneficial, harmless and harmful effects. Recommendations for nutrition education aimed at modifying existing negative practices and reinforcing beneficial ones, and at promoting correct knowledge among possible sources of breastfeeding and weaning information as found within the mothers social environment are given.
